That's ridiculous. The moon only reflects the sun and without the sun we would be in perpetual night and, needless to say, we would not have come into existence. I did read once that the Germanic tribes worshipped the moon because they hunted at night. Perhaps the person you quoted does too??
But without the sun we would die.
